Mulheres são pessoas

As "Famous Five" (As Cinco Famosas) foram cinco mulheres que, em 1927, iniciaram um processo no Supremo Tribunal do Canadá e, mais tarde, no Comité Judicial do Conselho Privado, relativo ao direito das mulheres de serem nomeadas para o Senado canadiano. O caso é conhecido no Canadá como o "Caso das Pessoas" (Persons Case), porque a questão a decidir era se as mulheres eram consideradas "pessoas" perante a lei. Após o Supremo Tribunal ter respondido negativamente a esta questão, as cinco mulheres recorreram para o Conselho Privado em Londres, que anulou a decisão do Supremo Tribunal e decidiu a favor das autoras.

The Famous Five were five women who in 1927 initiated proceedings before the Supreme Court of Canada and later the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council concerning the right of women to be appointed to the Canadian Senate. The case is known in Canada as the Persons Case because the question to be decided was whether women were "persons" under the law. After the Supreme Court answered this question in the negative, the five women appealed to the Privy Council in London, which overturned the Supreme Court's decision and ruled in favor of the plaintiffs.
